QUAKER/O’NEIL ROAD CANAL BRIDGE TO BE CONVERTED TO PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
Bridge will Permanently Close to Motor Vehicle Traffic on Thursday, June 1

The New York State Department of Transportation today announced that the bridge carrying O’Neil Road over the Erie Canal in the town of Macedon, Wayne County, will be converted to a pedestrian bridge on Thursday, June 1, 2017. The span, which is locally referred to as the Quaker Bridge, will permanently close to motor vehicle traffic on that date.

The single lane steel thru-truss bridge was constructed in 1914 and is an important element of the Erie Canalway Trail as the path shifts from the south shore of the canal east of the bridge to the north shore to the west, towards the Village of Macedon. The bridge features a concrete deck that has reached the end of its service life and can no longer be maintained for motor vehicle use. The sidewalk surface is in good condition and will remain open to serve bicyclists and pedestrians.

O’Neil Road intersects with Quaker Road to the north of the Erie Canal and connects to Route 31 south of the waterway. This bridge is situated on the eastern edge of the Macedon village line, roughly a half mile east of the Route 31F bridge and less than two miles west of the Walworth Road bridge, both of which are unrestricted crossings.
